Some know Jason as one of the most trusted psychics in the Upstate. Others know him as the guy who created the Greenville Ghost Tour. “Telling ghost stories comes naturally,” Jason admits. “When I was a child, my mother helped folks get rid of spirits in their homes.” Jason’s career as a palm reader, psychic and paranormal investigator materialized out of a rebellious youth. “I was intent on debunking all things of a mystical nature.

Daniel Jones is a cut above the rest!

Daniel was supposed to be a funeral director. "I started working at a funeral home at age 14. And I loved it," says the Greenville, South Carolina native. So why did he go into hair styling? "My dead people looked fabulous!" he says. "I knew I was born to do this instead."

Thomas Cabaniss is a Man of Action

As founder of Action Video Productions, Thomas has been wowing us with his film projects for the past 25 years. Inspired by “can do” people and his daughters Haley, Taylor & Sadie (Hay, Tay & Say for short), this productive perfectionist is now poised to launch another venture, Zebra Dazzle. “Zebras are unique—no two are alike—and a group of zebras is called a dazzle,” Thomas explains. “We are a group of uniquely creative artists who have come together to dazzle our clients with our creative marketing services.”

What do you love about skirt magazine? “Starting with its unique shape, paper stock, brilliant colors, creative layout, professional photography and the excellent copywriting I give it an A+. And I should know. Creative is what I do for a living!”

How do you feel wearing a skirt? “All my life my views have been about fairness, equality and diversity, so being the free spirit that I am, I think it’s only fitting that I have my turn at wearing a skirt.”

Dave Ball is Piping in the Pinot

While attending a conference in San Francisco, local attorney Dave became intrigued when a colleague began pouring his own custom wine. Later that week, after tasting Pinot Noir wines in Carmel, Dave was struck with a radical notion. Why not create a Pinot pipeline from California to the Carolinas? The idea soon ripened into Dave’s own line of wine appropriately called Calicaro, a mash up of CALIfornia and CAROlina. “We are making exceptional single vineyard designated handcrafted Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from some of the best vineyards in California. It is true micro-lot handmade wine, made literally one barrel at a time,” says the hands-on vintner. Find out more at calicaro.com.

What do you love about skirt! magazine?
“How 'bout that it rhymes with flirt? And dirt. Wine people love good dirt.”

How do you feel wearing a skirt? “The things I do to sell a little vino. It's gonna take years of therapy to get over this. Or just some good Calicaro wine.”

Joe and Andy are cooking up comfort!

Delicious food like Grandma’s—that’s what Joe Kelly and Andy Melton promise at their homey restaurant, Chicken Noodles. The friends cooked up the idea for their comfort food cuisine after searching for, but not finding, a place to nosh on “just soup and a sandwich.” Keeping it simple, fresh, and recognizable has paid off for the Greenville Tech culinary school grads, with menu items like their signature Chicken Noodle Soup becoming crowd favorites. A soup that didn’t fare as well? “Chili dog soup,” Joe says with a grin.

How do you feel wearing a skirt? “Wearing the skirt helps us feel closer to our grandmothers. Their old style of cooking and making everything from scratch are what people now enjoy eating. Disappointing our grandmothers is the last thing either of us would want to do.”

What do you love about skirt magazine? “The fresh images and pictures. skirt! feels like a sunny spring day regardless of the weather outside.”

Dr. Michael Siebert has Global Vision.

Michael, a recent transplant from Miami, writes for OutTraveler Magazine and loves Taco Bell—despite his good eating habits. His hobbies include photography, reading, writing, fitness, and…lots and lots of TRAVEL. As an Optometrist and OneSight clinic team volunteer, he journeys to developing countries delivering free eye care and recycled glasses. “After being here for a short time, I am noticing my patients are unaware of recycling their glasses to help those in need.” Michael writes. “Would skirt! be able to help spread the word?” Absolutely! To donate time, money, or eyeglasses to OneSight, go to onesight.org.

How do you feel wearing a skirt? I have a swagger and it allows me to swagger more and... it is quite probable...with even more confidence.

What do you love about skirt magazine? The opportunity skirt! has provided me to inform our community about donating money or used eyeglasses to help our world see better.

Olivier & Trey Are On a Dual Mission

Olivier Blanchard and Trey Pennington share a mission. “We’re battling useless babble on social meaning and aiming for meaningful, significant engagement,” Trey laughs. The two longtime business and marketing strategists became acquainted on Twitter, but had never met face-to-face until Trey started the Greenville Social Media Club in 2008. “After that, we went from being online to offline connections and best friends,” Oliver relates. Socially conscious, Trey serves on the SC State Board of Nursing (his signature will be on all nursing licenses beginning this year) while Olivier supports his favorite “charity,” the US recession, “donating as much of my time as I can to cash-poor small businesses in need of strategic insight.” Follow these master marketers at treypennington.com and thebrandbuilder.wordpress.com.

What do you love about skirt! magazine? I spend so much time online, it’s the little things: the weight, the smell of the ink and the paper, and the cover designs. ~Olivier

How do you feel wearing a skirt? It was an uplifting, stimulating experience! ~Trey

Derek White is Having a Ball!

Southern men love their football and Derek is no exception. He grew up playing football (started at age five) and even met and married his college sweetheart—a cheerleader, of course—while playing ball at North Greenville University. Today Derek is passing on his love of the sport as a football coach at Christ Church Episcopal School where he is inspired by “God and the kids I work with.” When he’s not tossing around the pigskin, Derek likes to cook, play with his dog Oscar, and spend time with his wife.

What do you love about reading skirt!? Its uniquely feminine attitude.

What do you like most about wearing a skirt? It shows off my legs so I can get some sun on them. I kind of like it—I think I could get used to it—but in my profession, it might not fly!

Hernan Justo is Goal-Oriented

“I am inspired,” admits Hernan, “by artists who work hard, giving everything to make the lives of unknown people more enjoyable.” As an acclaimed dancer and accomplished choreographer, Hernan is an inspiration himself. Born in Buenos Aires, Hernan danced his way across South America before making the leap to the United States. Currently, as Artistic Director for the Carolina Ballet Theatre in Greenville, Hernan shares his passion for dance by overseeing stunning classical ballet and contemporary performances. In his downtime though, Hernan is passionate about other goals—those achieved on a soccer field, perhaps?

What do you love about skirt! magazine? You inform us of the good things about the human race.

How do you feel wearing a skirt? How many times in such a town like Greenville, SC, can a man wear a skirt, be photographed, and be published. Come on. This is priceless!

Jacob Billingsley- Dairy Delightful

“I’m not the healthiest guy on the planet, but there just comes a time when you grow up and stop eating cheeseburgers all the time,” laughs bachelor Jacob, who hails most recently from the West Coast. As proprietor of the Blueberry Frog in the trendy West End, this ex-bartender turned frozen yogurt guru seeks to convert others with his very secret (shhhh!) recipe for the scrumptious fat-free, no sugar added, organic treat.

Jacob and his bohemian-flavored hangout also attract soul-inspiring events such as the Pink Slip Party held last April (a networking  mixer for the newly unemployed), and a weekly gathering of local artisans who, between bites of yogurt and toppings, create crafts that benefit a third-world orphanage.

Are you a feminist? Of course! Woman can do whatever they want! It’s kind of a shame we’re still talking about that in 2009.

What do you love about skirt magazine? It's unique voice—unwavering, without pandering to the masses.

How do you feel wearing a skirt? Glad that I didn't wear my mirror shoes.

Dr. Roger Rhoades has a gift for guidance.
As a licensed professional counselor and an authority on marriage, family, and relationships, Roger knows what side his bread is buttered when it comes to his own home life. “My wife Suzanne is the best. It’s got to be hard to live with an Okie extrovert and raise two children at the same time.” When this ex-Okie turned Greenvillite isn’t writing books (Living in the Moment), appearing on talk shows (Oprah, Montel Williams, Rickie Lake, and The View, to name a few), or serving as Senior Therapist at the P.A.C.E. Center in Spartanburg, he can usually be found chillin’ at home with the “rat dog” or shagging the night away with Suzanne.

What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!? “You have real people writing from their heart and soul about real life issues.”

Wilson and Jake Eidson are convivial coiffeurs

These scissor-wielding and curling iron-totin’ father and son can do a number on you. Or on your hair, that is. Twenty-four years ago, Wilson’s on Washington opened as Greenville’s first “contemporary” salon. Wilson wanted to see a salon that was as current as any in NY or LA here in Greenville. And so it is. The salon is swanky, with mirrors everywhere in an open atmosphere. How do they like working together? “Seeing him every day is such a joy. I know time is valuable and short.” Jake admires his dad’s professional drive and sense of humor. “He’s got a terrific work ethic. He entertains his clients as he works and I can hear what he is saying. It just makes me laugh.” For himself, Jake sees a future as a SLED agent and a fireman. “How’s that for variety?”

What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!? “It really covers a lot of hard working Upstate women that we should be aware of.” ~Wilson

What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt? “It was crazy. How often do you get to share such a creative experience with the world?” ~Wilson

Hunter Moss is a man with plans.

They say a photo is worth a thousand words. From Hunter Moss Photography & Videography, WhatsGoingOnGreenville.com, DowntownDelivery.net, the Downtown Tree Lot (where he sells Christmas trees), to Crazy Hunter’s Fireworks, he’s busy. And sometimes, when business is slow, he starts selling his possessions on eBay. He’s fun, funny and can laugh at himself (no, really?). Sporting the beard is something he’s carried over from college days, and let’s just say it gives him a certain panache, no? When you meet Hunter, ask him to tell you about the perfectly good Cadillac Limo he covered in green AstroTurf.  If he ever slows down, he’d like to learn to play the saxophone. This Greer boy who found home in downtown Greenville is a self-proclaimed ping-pong champ, and a pescetarian. And after a long, hard day, he might turn on Travis Tritt’s “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and enjoy a beer in the shower. Sounds good to me.

What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!?

“It’s like me...all about women!”

What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt?
“It feels good! But does it make me look fat?”

Jon Montoya is focused on fitness

Though what happens in Vegas typically stays there, this time it moved to Greenville. Jon met his Greenville-native wife five years ago in Las Vegas while he was visiting from a San Francisco corporation and she was on vacation. He opened Fitness 19 on Woodruff Road to provide a place where people can afford to get fit. At $19 a month, it’s hard to beat. Jon’s primary concerns are maintaining a relationship with his clients and creating an inviting and clean workout facility. You’d never know that about 500 people come through the gym every day. It’s spectacularly clean. When he’s not running the business, he and his wife are planning a skydiving trip. But right now, he’s off to visit family on the West coast. First stop? His favorite sushi restaurant. Next time you’re in San Francisco, try Lacuni’s and tell them Jon sent you.

What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!?
“I’m all about quality, and this is quality.”

What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt?
“I feel pretty sexy.”

Edwin McCain and Carl Sobocinski are euphoric.
And not just because of the bar-top entertainment. This year, the platinum-selling singer-songwriter and well-known restaurateur have teamed up to entice the senses of downtown Greenville for four days in September during an entertainment and culinary extravaganza they’ve named “Euphoria.” The love connection? Just two good friends who met over a bottle of tequila. When they’re not collaborating for a good cause, the two are just, well, guys. What can they not live without, other than fine wine and good food? “Sex. No, make that chocolate,” Carl says. And Edwin? “Dora the Explorer. I believe she’s is the reason that my children can poop!” Given the chance to fulfill other lifelong dreams, Carl would sail the Caribbean and learn to play the saxophone. Edwin would hang with Van Halen for non-stop concerts and learn to fly. After all, boys will be boys.

What’s your favorite thing about reading skirt!?
“There’s a market for it,” Carl says. “It’s different, and it’s well-done.” Adds Edwin, “It’s very insightful. I love it!”

What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt?
Edwin says, “I’ve fully embraced this side of myself.” Adds Carl, “It’s liberating and quite comfortable.

And most of them are named Sally. “The girls are the workers, so I named them.” After a career in broadcasting, Kerry Owen bought an apple orchard. With no apples. So a friend gave him a beehive for pollination and a second career was born. Now, he takes 528 hives on road trips, seeking out Tulip Poplars, Sourwood trees, blackberries and vetch. He sells the honey at his Bee Well Honey and Natural Market in downtown Pickens. His love of the countryside is matched only by his soft spot for the science of beekeeping.

Kris plays with fire, and water.

A former Marine and native of Montana, Kris Decker met his wife, Monica, while living in Maui. It was there that he decided to turn his long-time passion for photography into his dream job. Now, the couple owns the aptly named Firewater Photography, specializing in architecture and fine art. Kris’ career embodies his sense of adventure as well as his appreciation of beauty. “Monica is a professional model, so while I’m shooting a corporate office, high-end kitchen or restaurant, she styles the set.” He also appreciates the power of the feminine beyond a life and business partner.

Bill, Pete, and Joe are happy bluesmen.
Head down to the Handlebar or a festival downtown, and you’ll probably hear True Blues, a band of two brothers plus two. Joey Gunter, Pete Cash and his brother Joe formed the band almost 18 years ago. To round out the trio, they added Bill Pappas of Athens, GA, who had played with Joe and Pete in a band when they were students at The Citadel just a few years before. “We all grew up playing music,” Joe says. “Wait, have we grown up?” Bill asks. And he’s a nuclear physicist by day, wouldn’t you know?

Bill Masters is an adrenaline junkie.
While studying electrical engineering at Clemson University in the 1970s, Bill worked summers building kayaks and as a river guide, kayaking down the Nantahala and Chattooga. But the young entrepreneur decided to make a better mousetrap.  Fast forward a few years to 1998 when Bill sold his world’s-largest and wildly successful Easley-based kayak company, Perception, to retire.  To the skies, that is. Working hard and with a new family, Bill had put his love of flying aside while he raised his children, now in their 20s and 30s.
